Now this one was the major project of the fifth semester game design BA. The assignement was to create a multi-player game in any engine desired. Konradin Kuhn, Bruno Meilick and me teamed up to create a game called "Extremely funky captain ahabs and the wild wet waterworld" in Unity 3D Pro.
Our ambition was to create a game which is playable on one machine with four players. The players could decide to play one of several captains of fictional or historical origin to hunt or defend a small purple whale. Of course Captain Ahab (Moby Dick) was present, but we also planed for Captain Blackbeard, Captain Iglo, Captain Nemo, Captain Columbus, Greenpiece and Noah to ame an apearance. In the end we had to cut down on a lot but the final game still features quite a lot of things.
- Water physics via transformable surface mesh
- two attacks per player in a balanced individual rooster
- dynamic atmosphere and ambient soundtrack on ten tracks
- level generation by colored height-maps
- an extremely funky glow aesthetic
Now, the game took a combined of around 180 hours but could use another moth for polish and full implementation of all features of the game design document. A major downside was the failed implementation of joystick controls, which leaves 4 players to play via keyboard. At the presentation we then used an external keyboard to have each fraction play on their own space.
It was a very interesting project and the biggest so far. The teamwork with Konradin and Bruno was extremely satifying and I'm allready anxious to see what they will produce for their bachelor.
